My buddy that’s looking for a car, the one I tried to get into a Saturn LW300, is looking at this.
A plain white, plain boring, 2008 Corolla. It couldn’t be more beige, aside for it actually being beige. It has 54,000 miles and the dealership that is selling it is asking 7495. It says clean title but a vin records show it was totaled in April. Any way I directed him to this.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
A nice grey 2013 Fit with 6000 miles for 7999. Because tall hatches are the future today.
The only real advantage the Corolla has is, it’s 500 cheaper, and two hours closer.

The only thing wrong with it is the fact that it says clean title but it actually isn’t.
Remember, this is your buddy’s car, not yours. He’ll get what he wants.

I know but, it’s boring. I can’t stand by and let a friend buy a sedan.

Helping friends shop for cars requires one to...

It’s only as boring as you let it be. Have you mentioned the idea of a Matrix?

The Corolla is a good car. I’d steer him away just because of the fact it was totaled.

Yeah. And I know he’s going to at some time wish he had the cargo room. He’s likes to move around and travel a lot. Hard to do those in a compact sedan.

I have, they’re aren’t any around in the mileage/price point he wants. Which is under 80,000 and 8,000 respectively.

May I present my daily:
2005 with 141,000 miles purchased for $3700 with a set of winter wheels and tires. Clean title though. It’s a good car. It’s reliable, cheap, easily repairable, light and fuel efficient. It’s perfect for what I need right now while I’m commuting 46 miles per day for college and work 5 days a week.

I know it’s a good car. I just believe the Fit does the same job better. With more leg, head, and cargo room. All things he’s going to need. As he travels a lot, and often has 4 people in his car(when he has one). I think the only sacrifices between the two would be 2-3 hey MPG. We get about 36 on long trips. Right now our average is 34.5 over like 2,000 miles. We have a 2010 Fit Sport.

plenty of non-totaled Corollas to check out, so stay away from the totaled shit.
He might also like a Matrix or Vibe (Corolla wagon)
The LW300 is awful because of the transverse V6. An LW200 would be better.

Honestly, I’d take a 2008 Corolla over any Saturn. Ever.

For that kind of money I’d probably get a Fit too. I’d prefer a hatchback. They weren’t in my price range when I was car shopping last year or I would have considered one. That Corolla is low mileage but I would still consider it overpriced especially with a salvage title. If he wants a Corolla I would suggest finding a better one but between the two featured cars I would go with the Fit.

I’d guess that Saturn is sold, that was like two weeks ago. I haven’t found a clean Matrix or Vibe in the price/mileage range he’s looking for.

You’re right. The appeal of the Saturn was Wagon, and it was only 2200 dollars. Plus it was a nice dark green his favorite color.

The trunks in those are huge though.

Yikes, $8000 is enough to buy something without a branded title.
Did some poking around your local CL:

I completely disagree.
The 2009 Corolla my wife used to have was the worst car I’ve ever driven. Granted, it got good gas mileage and never needed fixed, but it was horribly uncomfortable, bouncy, slow, and generally depressing to drive.

I put two mountain bikes, a tent and weekends worth of camping gear, including a cooler full of beer in the Fit. Can a Corolla do that without a roof rack?

Probably not

I completely agree.
The 2009 Corolla my wife used to have was the best car I’ve ever driven. Granted, it got good gas mileage and never needed fixed, and it was amazingly comfortable, smooth, quick., sporty, and generally exhilarating to drive.

My buddy is determined to buy something with less that 80,000 miles. Something he can for get 5 years out of, at 20,000 miles a year. And is looking for 35mpg.

The only way a Corolla (not this Corolla, salvage title at this price is a no-go, especially since they’re advertising it as clean) is worse than the Saturn is that it’s a sedan. Conversely, there are important ways that a Corolla is better than the Saturn, the main one being that it isn’t a 20-year-old GM shitbox from a defunct brand.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 22:34 |
|
Well the Saturn was also 5500 dollars less. But yeah it’s not in the running. The Fit I think is just a better choice than the Corolla. You sacrifice maybe 2mpg for a ton more cargo, and leg room, plus it’s 5 years newer.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 22:44 |
|
Absolutely agreed on the Fit. That’d be my choice.
![]() 07/31/2017 at 23:00 |

I had a 2006 Corolla and it was miserable. It droned, it bounced around, the wind made you it’s bitch, there was no leg room, the seating position was awful and it was all together just uggghhhh. The Fit is a much better car especially considering that Corolla has been totaled and they are still asking way more than it would be worth even if it was actually clean.

I’m not saying he can’t do better than the corolla, but assuming it wasn’t actually wrecked it would make a perfect comuter appliance for someone who doesn’t care.
Also, friends don’t try to put friends in Saturns.
